Summary (Goodreads):

She's a tomboy. He's the boy next door…

Charlie Reynolds can outrun, outscore, and outwit every boy she knows. But when it comes to being a girl, Charlie doesn't know the first thing about anything. So when she starts working at a chichi boutique to pay off a speeding ticket, she finds herself in a strange new world. To cope with the stress of her new reality, Charlie takes to spending nights chatting with her neighbor Braden through the fence between their yards. As she grows to depend on their nightly Fence Chats, she realizes she's got a bigger problem than speeding tickets-she's falling for Braden. She knows what it means to go for the win, but if spilling her secret means losing him for good, the stakes just got too high.

Fun, original, and endearing, On the Fence is a romantic comedy about finding yourself and finding love where you least expect.

My Thoughts:

This is a wonderful YA contemporary, which I could not put it down. This book involves a protagonist which is the ultimate tomboy, a brilliant family dynamic, a sweet romance and an importance on friendships.

We first meet Charlie (Charlotte) Rhodes who is the ultimate tomboy. She loves playing sports, watching sports and talking about sports. Messing around with her 3 brothers and their best friend from next door is one of her favourite past times and make-up, clothes and girly things are all but forgotten. She has no one to teach her about girly things because her mother died when she was six and her father, well let’s just say he is a lost cause on the girl department. After receiving a speeding fine her dad makes her get a new job to pay him back for it. She ends up finding a job in a small boutique and finds herself in a world that she has never immersed herself in.

This story will warm your heart. I found it to be original and I fell in love with every single character. The first thing I loved about this book would definitely have to be the family dynamic in this book. The relationship between Charlie and her brothers is endearing and heart-warming and amazing. I loved seeing the affection they have for each other and their taunts and sibling playfulness made me smile and laugh.

Secondly I loved Charlie’s character. She is not your average teenage girl that you find in every contemporary novel, she was different. I loved how she kept up with all her brothers (and next door neighbour). She was able to match them in strength and ability when it came to sports. And when it came to them taunting each other, she never acted like a ‘normal’ girl would (screaming etc), she would take it in stride and laugh it off. I loved seeing the friendship she had with her brothers and the way they protected her.

Then there were the side characters. Her dad was just stinking adorable, managing to bring up four children on his own and then also trying to be a ‘mother’ to Charlie was just heart-warming. I loved his small attempts at trying to talk to Charlie about bras, her period and other girly things, it was just absolutely adorable. Her co-workers were other characters I loved, especially her boss, how she was truly accepting of Charlie and helped her with fashion etc. Then last but not least there was Braden her neighbour, in which she had midnight conversations with through the fence. I could not help but adore him.

I loved absolutely everything about this book. Once again the family dynamic is what I really enjoyed about this book. But also the friendship and the sweetest romance. I read this book as an ebook and I am not going to hesitate in buying a hard copy of this book for my collection. This has fast become one of my absolute favourite contemporaries and I cannot highly recommend it enough!!!
